What’s Growing
Although our main crop is organic garlic, we experiment with a number of different vegetables each year. Below is a list of what’s growing in the 2024 growing season.
Summer Harvest
Garlic - Music
Music is perhaps the most popular variety of garlic grown in Ontario. Its large bulbs produce 4-6 big cloves that are popular with chefs and home cooks alike. Their scapes are great for making making garlicy pesto.
Garlic - Kostyn’s Red Russian
This marbled purple stripe produces about 6 large cloves with a bold flavour. Its thick wrappers make this variety good for longer-term storage.
Fall Harvest
Pumpkins - Galeux d’Eysines
Galeux d’Eysines pumpkins are a warty, salmon-pink French heirloom variety. Its distinctive peanut-like warts are caused when sugars swell outside its skin. It produces a flattened fruit between 7-10 kg. It is prized in French cooking and will make an incredibly delicious pumpkin pie.
Pumpkins - Small Sugar
The small sugar pumpkin is a classic pie pumpkin. This variety was introduced to North America in 1863, and it produces small, round fruits that are slightly ribbed.
Squash - Waltham Butternut
The Waltham butternut squash produces large, uniform fruits that can weigh up to 2 kg. Though its skin is light tan, the rich and creamy flesh is bright yellow-orange. These squash can be stored for several months and enjoyed throughout the winter months.
Potatoes - German Butterball
German Butterball potatoes are another yellow skinned, yellow fleshed potato that is wildly popular. It is a versatile potato with a rich and creamy taste. Popular baked or boiled and will likely be a hit at your next Thanksgiving dinner.
Corn - White Corn
White corn, also known as Tuscarora/Iroquois white corn is an heirloom corn that is one of the three sisters. It produces large white kernels on long ears and is dried and used in cornbread or corn soup.
